Body of legislative measures and corresponding institutions that cover or protect against the risks faced by citizens, principally with regard to work and health. These measures were instituted in Western Europe at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth; in Latin America, after the First World War; in the US in the 1930s.
