• 1941 Penicillin is used for the first time

• 1903 Georges Simenon is born in Liège. His fame is due above all to the creation of the character of Commissioner Maigret (almost one hundred titles): less known, but not less prolific, his literary production of novels and non-genre stories (The man who watched trains pass, The testament Donadieu , The strangers at home) and his activity as a screenwriter; for Jean Renoir, Marcel Carné, Nicholas Ray, Henry Hathaway among others. Even less known was his support for refugees during the Second World War: in 1938 he launched the "Without Hate" movement with Lucien Descaves, from the columns of Le Journal.
